Film title: >journeying > meeting > making >
Duration: 13’58’’
Working together in our new collaborative CoLab partnership – artist/improviser Geoff Bright, artist/musicians Geoff and Brenda Heslop and myself Gillian Whiteley (aka bricolagekitchen) – we spent a few days in October, talking, exchanging and reviewing our respective art practices, playing music together and improvising with voices, instruments and objects. New soundscapes and visual imagery emerged from this coming together of life, experience and place and we produced a short video to accompany the freely improvised soundtrack we had created.
>journeying > meeting > making >
This film short responds to the ongoing process of a physical, imaginative and digital journeying made by two pairs of visual and sonic artists between two changing spaces in the UK: one, that of contemporary rurality (Otterburn, Northumberland) the other a post-industrial urban environment (Attercliffe – pre-industrially known as ‘Otter Cliff’ – in inner-city Sheffield). Assembling a bricolage of moving image, painted surface, performance drawing and freely improvised music we seek to unsettle conventional expectations of the ‘open spaces’ of the rural and the ‘crowded places’ of the urban by bringing them together in a visual and sonic flux where they meet, inter-mesh and interchange.
